Etymology

A classical compound of the Ancient Greek κολεός (koleós, sheath) + the (deprecated template usage) [etyl] English -ptile (leaf) – the suffix representing the Ancient Greek πτῐ́λον (ptílon) – probably after the French coléoptile.
