From Proto-Balto-Slavic *dēˀd-, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰeh₁dʰ-o-. Cognate with Latvian dȩ̀ds (old man), Proto-Slavic *dě̀dъ (grandfather), Ancient Greek τήθη (tḗthē, grandmother).[1]
