Etymology[edit]

From Vulgar Latin *damnāticum, from Latin damnum. The regular outcome should have been *danâjo; the actual /m/ may reflect influence from Latin[1] or one of the neighbouring languages with regular /mn/ > /m/ (cf. Old French damage).
