Etymology

Borrowed from French défaitisme, coined in 1915 by Russian writer Grigorij Aleksinskij as a translation of Russian пораже́нчество (poražénčestvo), also coined by him as a derivation of порази́ть (porazítʹ, to strike, defeat). Surface analysis: defeat +‎ -ism.
