From Middle Welsh diueð, from Old Welsh diued, from Proto-Brythonic *diweð, from Proto-Celtic *dīwedom, from *dī- (from, away) + *wedo- (to lead); compare Breton diwez, Cornish deweth, and Old Irish díad.
