Etymology[edit]

From Old Danish dræpæ, from Old Norse drepa, from Proto-Germanic *drepaną (to hit, strike). Compare Norwegian Bokmål drepe and Swedish dräpa. Also cognate with German treffen (to meet, hit), whence Danish træffe.
