Etymology 1

From ein (“to beat”) +‎ bläuen, from Old High German bliuwan, from Proto-Germanic *blewwaną. Formerly spelled einbleuen; the spelling with ä comes from a folk etymological association with blau (“blue”) and was introduced in the spelling reform (Rechtschreibreform) of 1996.
