Etymology

From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle High German ellende, contracted from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Old High German elilenti. The modern form with a long vowel is based on (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle Low German elende and/or other regional variants. Today pronounced also with a secondary full vowel in the second syllable. Cognate to Dutch ellende (noun only).
