Fake[edit]

Not a rare word. A word invented on a vandalization of Spanish language wikipedia in 2008. That was the first recorded use. Then a couple sites copied it. Then it was removed from Wikipedia. And then someone published a book about «rarely used Spanish words» that included it and, even worse, used it on the title, so it was reintroduced on wikipedia with it as the source, a circular source.

Assuming you're right about its origins- and I have no reason to doubt you- the question is whether it made it into the language as a real word. As a descriptive dictionary, it's our job to describe the language that is or has been in actual use by speakers of the language. It's entirely possible that an entirely fake, made-up word could be adopted and used by regular speakers as part of their language- after which the dubious origin is just a detail to put in the etymology and maybe in a label or usage note. The history of language is full of mistakes, misunderstandings and outright fraud, so this wouldn't be the first time something similar has happened. For example, there's a whole literature of books and articles about phobias which is full of someone writing about a phobia they made up and others telling their readers about it as if every competent mental health professional already knew about it and used it all the time. Usually we can get these deleted because everybody mentions it, but no one actually uses. Sometimes, though, one of these gets picked up and becomes part of people's working vocabulary.
Please see WT:CFI, especially the part about the use–mention distinction. I will submit this to Requests for verification/Italic, and we'll see if anyone can find the word in actual use rather than just being written about. If not, it will be deleted. Spanish.

An IP has stated on the talk page that this is a hoax inserted at Spanish Wikipedia and written about in a couple of books on rare Spanish words before it was removed. I'm bringing it here so we can determine whether it's gained any traction in real use. Chuck Entz (talk) 00:30, 19 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
