Etymology

Literally “English week”, due to the fact that such schedules were adopted by the Bundesliga on the model of the English Premier League.

englische Woche f (genitive englischer Woche or englischen Woche, plural englische Wochen or englischen Wochen)

  1. (idiomatic, soccer) A week where league matches are played during the week (Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday), which happens only a few times per year.
  2. (idiomatic, soccer, loosely) A week where a given team plays a match in a national or international cup competition during the week.
