Usage notes[edit]

Some Esperantists prefer the coinages uesto and eosto to okcidento and oriento, because this gives each direction a unique initial. Some say it also has the advantage of avoiding any political undertones in the terms occident and orient.

Others reject these terms as superfluous, and simply use two-letter abbreviations for compass directions.
