Etymology[edit]

From Old Galician-Portuguese escrivan (13th century, Cantigas de Santa Maria), from Late Latin *scrība, *scrībānem, from Latin scrība (“writer, scribe”).[1] Doublet of escriba, a borrowing.

Cognate with Portuguese escrivão and Spanish escribano.
