From Latin aetherem, accusative form of aethēr (“the upper pure, bright air”), from Ancient Greek αἰθήρ (aithḗr, “upper air”), from αἴθω (aíthō, “I burn, shine”), from the (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European root *h₂eydʰ- (“to ignite, burn”).
