Old Norse[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Germanic *furhiją (forest of firs), from Proto-Indo-European *perkʷ- (tree, oak, fir). Cognate with Old High German forst (pine wood, pine forest), Old English fyrhþ (wooded country). More at forest.
