Attested since the 15h century. From Old Galician and Old Galician-Portuguese, from Vulgar Latin *fenunclu, from Latin fēnuculum (“fennel”), a diminutive of Latin fēnum (“hay”). Cognate with Portuguese funcho and Spanish hinojo.
