Attested since the 15h century. From Old Galician and Old Galician-Portuguese, from Vulgar Latin *fenunclu, from Latin fēnuculum (fennel), a diminutive of Latin fēnum (hay). Cognate with Portuguese funcho and Spanish hinojo.
