English

Etymology

The name comes from the fact that the symbol is the width of a single digit in fonts where this width is constant.

Noun

figure dash (plural figure dashes)

  1. The punctuation mark '' (used when a dash must be used in numbers).

Usage notes

If a dash is used to express a range (such as "the numbers from 1 to 10") an en dash is used instead of a figure dash ("the numbers 1–10")
