Etymology[edit]

Eventually from Latin fascia. Regarding the preserved velar/uvular, the form cannot have passed through Sicilian fascia, whence indeed Maltese faxxa. Hence probably inherited from older Arabic فَصْقِيّة (faṣqiyya, a kind of cloth or bandage, whence also Spanish falquía (halter)), from Ancient Greek φασκία (phaskía). Alternatively directly from the Greek.
