(deprecated template usage) From Proto-Germanic *feþrō, whence also Old English feþer (English feather), Old Saxon fethara, Old High German fedara (German Feder). Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *péth₂r̥ ~ pth₂én- (feather, wing), from *peth₂- (to fly).
