Etymology[edit]

Either from Proto-Albanian *splutura (cf. Latin papilio 'id.', Old Saxon fifaldra ‎(id)), close to Old English floterian, flotorian ‎(to float about, flutter), Low German fluttern, fluddern ‎(to flutter) or more likely from Proto-Albanian *flugtur, a formation from flug (cf. butë). See flatër ‎(wing). Compare also the related Romanian fluture.
