Etymology

From Middle English forbiten (to bite up), from Old English forbītan, equivalent to for- +‎ bite. Cognate with West Frisian forbite (to forbite), Dutch verbijten (to forbite), Low German verbīten (to forbite), German verbeissen (to forbite). More at for-, bite.
