Etymology[edit]

Previously spelt frådse. From Middle Low German vrāsen, from Old Saxon fretan, from Proto-West Germanic *fraetan, cognate with German fressen (to eat, devour), English fret, Gothic 𐍆𐍂𐌰𐌹𐍄𐌰𐌽 (fraitan, to devour). A compound of *fra- (away) +‎ *etaną (to eat).
