From Old High German frīatag, from Proto-Germanic *Frijjōz dagaz (literally Day of Frigg), a calque of Latin dīes Veneris (Friday, literally day of Venus). Cognate with German Freitag, Dutch vrijdag, West Frisian freed, English Friday.
