Etymology[edit]

From Middle High German geinen, from Old High German geinōn, from Proto-Germanic *gainōną, related to *ginōną (English yawn) and *gīnaną (Old Norse gína). Also cognate with German gähnen, from both *ganōną and *gīnaną.
