From Middle High German güldīn, chiefly western variant of guldīn (with regular lack of umlaut before -ld-), from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Old High German guldīn, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Germanic *gulþīnaz, ultimately from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰelh₃- (“to shine”).
