From Proto-Common Turkic (compare Kipchak gür ("sturdy person, thick, strong"), Old Turkic 𐰚𐰇𐰼 (kür, bully, to be able to, valiant)), from Proto-Turkic *kü- (to force, to be powerful). Related to güç (strength; difficult).
