Etymology
From West Old Turkic keriš-, kureš ("wrestling"), from the word root *küre- ("to wrestle"), from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Turkic *gErüĺ- (“to fight, to struggle”). Cognate with Kypchak küreş . Further cognates include Tatar köräš, kuraš, Uighur küräš, Azerbaijani güläš, Chuvash kǝreš/кӗреш(ӳ), Tuva xüres, Kyrgyz keriš, küröš, Kazakh keris, küres/курес, Bashkir көрәш (etc.).
Equivalent to gür (“strong”) + -eş.
