Etymology[edit]

From underlying Arabic عَلَى أَيِّ شَيْء (ʕalā ʔayyi šayʔ, literally on what thing). By surface analysis, għal (for) +‎ *iex (what); see xiex for the latter. Cognate with Moroccan Arabic علاش (ʕlāš, why).
