Etymology[edit]

From Arabic غِطَاء (ḡiṭāʔ). However, the final -u is hardly explainable from this form; hence probably merged with غَطْو (ḡaṭw, the act of covering).

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /ˈaː.tu/
    • IPA(key): /ˈaˤː.tu/ (archaic)
    • IPA(key): /ˈɣa.tu/ (archaic, rural)
  • (file)
  • Homophone: agħtu (except rural)

Noun[edit]

għatu m (plural għotjien)

  1. lid (top or cover)
