From Latin hierarchia, from Ancient Greek ἱεραρχία ‎(hierarkhía, rule of a high priest), from ἱεράρχης ‎(hierárkhēs, high priest), from ἱερεύς ‎(hiereús, priest) + ἀρχή ‎(arkhḗ, rule) (compare -archia).
