From Proto-West Germanic *gawundōn, from Proto-Germanic *gawundōną; equivalent to ġe- +‎ wundian. Compare Old Saxon giwundon, Middle Dutch gewonden, Middle High German gewunden, Gothic 𐌲𐌰𐍅𐌿𐌽𐌳𐍉𐌽 (gawundōn).
