From Proto-Balto-Slavic *gāˀi-, from Proto-Indo-European *g⁽ʷ⁾eH- (to sing, cry). Cognate with Latvian dziedāt (to sing), Proto-Slavic *gajati (to caw, croak), Sanskrit गायति (gāyati, sing).[1]
