Back-formation from glitzy, in turn from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] German glitzern (glint). Cognate with Old Norse glitra, glita (glitter) and Gothic 𐌲𐌻𐌹𐍄𐌼𐌿𐌽𐌾𐌰𐌽 (glitmunjan, glisten).
