Back-formation from glitzy, in turn from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] German glitzern (“glint”). Cognate with Old Norse glitra, glita (“glitter”) and Gothic 𐌲𐌻𐌹𐍄𐌼𐌿𐌽𐌾𐌰𐌽 (glitmunjan, “glisten”).
