Etymology[edit]

From Ancient Greek γοσσύπιον (gossúpion), a borrowing from Arabic كُرْسُف (kursuf), كُرْفُس (kurfus), ultimately from Sanskrit कर्पास (karpāsa, cotton), whence also Hebrew כַּרְפַּס (karp̄ás, fabric of cotton), whence Ancient Greek κάρπᾰσος (kárpasos, fabric of cotton), whence carbasus (fabric of cotton).
