German

Etymology

Short for grüß dich Gott, from grüß (subjunctive form of grüßen, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle High German grüezen) (“greet”) + dich + Gott; in the context, “greeting” should be understood as giving a sign of connectedness; hence, the meaning is very similar to “may God bless you.”[1]

Interjection

grüß Gott

  1. (Southern Germany, Austria) Hello.
