From Proto-Tai *kloːŋᴬ (drum). Cognate with Thai กลอง (glɔɔng), Lao ກອງ (kǭng), ᦂᦸᧂ (k̇oang), Shan ၵွင် (kǎung), Ahom 𑜀𑜨𑜂𑜫 (koṅ). Compare Vietnamese trống.
