Etymology

From Greek χαρτί (chartí), partly through South Slavic (compare Bulgarian хартия (hartija), Macedonian and Serbo-Croatian хартија). Compare Aromanian hãrtii. Cf. also carte, which has the same Ancient Greek root, but passed through Latin.
