Etymology

From Middle High German hōch, from Old High German hōh, from Proto-Germanic *hauhaz. The umlaut is perhaps generalised from the compared forms and the noun Héicht. Cognate with German hoch, Dutch hoog, English high, West Frisian heech, Icelandic hár.
