Etymology

From a (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle High German noun hucker (peddler, merchant), whence in early modern German the verb hockern (with variants). The contemporary form is Low German (compare (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle Low German höker). Pertaining to Hucke (load, burden). Compare also English huckster (borrowed from Dutch) and English hawk.
