Etymology

First coined in (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Swedish as halogen by chemist Jöns Jakob Berzelius, based on (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Ancient Greek ἅλς (háls), ἁλός (halos, “salt”), due to the nature of halides, the salt compounds halogens form with metals. Surface analysis: halo- +‎ -geno.
