Etymology[edit]

From Middle High German höufen, houfen, from Old High German *houfōn or (in view of the umlaut) perhaps *houfen (attested only as hauffen and gihoufot), a variant of hūfōn (whence Middle High German hūfen). Cognate with German häufen.
