From Malay intai (prying; watching secretly),[1] from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *hintay (to wait for; to spy on).[2] Also possibly from hin- +‎ antay, with elision of the first syllable of the root. Compare Malay intai, Iban intai, Toba Batak inte, Old Javanese inte / intay, Balinese inte, Sasak inte.
