Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Slavic *gorxъ. Cognate with Bulgarian грах ‎(grah), Serbo-Croatian гра̏х/grȁh ‎(bean), Russian горох ‎(gorox), Slovene grah. Non-Slavic cognates include German Giersch ‎(ground elder) and Sanskrit घर्षति ‎(ghárṣati, rub, polish).
