Etymology

From Proto-Slavic *gorxъ. Cognate with Bulgarian грах (grah), Serbo-Croatian гра̏х/grȁh (bean), Russian горох (gorox), Slovene grah. Non-Slavic cognates include German Giersch (ground elder) and Sanskrit घर्षति (ghárṣati, rub, polish).
