[edit]From Old Danish huilk, huilkin, Old Norse hvílíkr, from Proto-Germanic *hwilīkaz (“what kind of, what sort of”), cognate with English which, German welcher, Gothic 𐍈𐌹𐌻𐌴𐌹𐌺𐍃 (ƕileiks). A compound of *hwaz (“who”) + *-līkaz (“shaped”).
