Danish[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Old Danish hwænnær, hwannær, from Old Norse hvénær, a compound of 1. Old Norse hvé (how), from Proto-Germanic *hwē, and 2. Old Norse nær (closer).

An alternative explanation is that is related to (or borrowed from) Middle Low German wannēr (when) (cf. Dutch wanneer), which is a compound of 1. Proto-Germanic *hwan (when) and 2. Proto-Germanic *airiz (earlier). The former part is the same word as English when and German wenn, wann.
