[edit]hymy hyytyy (literally: "(one's) smile coagulates/loses power")
- (idiomatic) To stop smiling or laughing after a situation changes; to laugh on the other side of one's face.
- Kyllä hymysi hyytyy, kun poliisi huomaa että olet valehdellut heille.
- You'll (surely) be laughing on the other side of your face when the police find out you've been lying to them.
Usage notes
[edit]This verb phrase always has hymy (“smile”) as its subject, which often receives either a possessive suffix or a possessor that comes before the word in the genitive case.
