Along with Old Irish íath (grassland), from Proto-Celtic *ɸētu, from Proto-Indo-European *peyH-tu- (rich grassland, prairy), an extension of *peyH- (fat, milk).[1] Compare Ancient Greek πόα (póa, fodder).
