Along with Old Irish íath (“grassland”), from Proto-Celtic *ɸētu, from Proto-Indo-European *peyH-tu- (“rich grassland, prairy”), an extension of *peyH- (“fat, milk”).[1] Compare Ancient Greek πόα (póa, “fodder”).
