Etymology[edit]

Possibly influenced by ibar (valley) plus a suffix *-i,[1][2] or contaminated by ibi (ford). On the other hand, Lakarra proposes a compound of Proto-Basque *hur (water) +‎ *bani (cut, interrupted).[3]
