Etymology[edit]
Possibly influenced by ibar (“valley”) plus a suffix *-i,[1][2] or contaminated by ibi (“ford”). On the other hand, Lakarra proposes a compound of Proto-Basque *hur (“water”) + *bani (“cut, interrupted”).[3]
