Etymology

From iepure (rabbit, hare) +‎ -ar or possibly directly from Latin leporārius, from lepus (hare). The literal meaning is thus “something that has to do with rabbits/hares”, i.e. hunts them. Doublet of levrier (greyhound). Compare Aromanian iupurar.
