Luxembourgish

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From Middle High German überzeigen, alteration (after zeigen (to show)) of überziugen (which would have yielded Luxembourgish *iwwerzeien). Cognate with German überzeugen, Dutch overtuigen. The underlying verb zeegen was otherwise lost in Luxembourgish (but see Zär). For the preservation of intervocalic -g- as a gliding sound after Middle High German -ei- compare eegen.

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): [ivɐˈt͡seːʑən]

Verb

[edit]

iwwerzeegen (third-person singular present iwwerzeegt, past participle iwwerzeegt, auxiliary verb hunn)
